Are migraines getting you down? You’re not alone - Migraine Action reports that one in seven people in the UK suffer from migraines – but don’t despair as there are natural solutions to relieve your symptoms.

Causes

The exact cause of migraine is unknown but it is believed that abnormal biochemical changes in the brain cause inflammation, resulting in the brain swelling and pressing on nearby nerves, causing pain. There also appears to be genetic link to migraine headaches, with over 70% of migraine sufferers having a family history of the condition.

Triggers

Hormonal, emotional and physical triggers may be involved. Reactions to foods and food additives are common, typically including cheese, fermented foods, bananas, eggs, milk, peanuts, citrus fruits, chocolate, aged or processed meats and many alcoholic drinks. Poor blood sugar control and fatigue as well as environmental factors such as bright lights and seasonal and pressure changes may also provoke an attack.

Useful supplements:

  • Feverfew is a traditional herbal remedy for headaches, arthritis and fevers. Feverfew may reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks and for best results, should be taken continuously for 3 months.
  • Magnesium aids relaxation and migraine sufferers have been shown to be low in this vital mineral.  Magnesium deficiency may contribute to menstrual migraines.
  • Co-enzyme Q10 – studies using CoQ10 have shown both reduced severity and frequency of migraine attacks. CoQ10 may be particularly effective taken daily over 3 months.
